Edit Notifications screen details

Screen component Description
Email
Sending email address

Enter the email address for the appliance. This email address appears as the From or Sender line of the email message sent.

Format:

username@domain

Example:

alertmessenger@example.com

[NOTE: ]

NOTES:

  • If passwords are required for email accounts, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends creating a dedicated email account solely for email notification of alerts.

  • The appliance detects the SMTP server from the domain specified in this email address.

If authentication is not enabled in the SMTP server, you can specify a dummy user name. However, the specified domain must be valid.

  • You can choose to specify the SMTP server and port information separately in the SMTP options portion of this screen. If you do, the appliance uses that information and does not try to detect the SMTP server from the email address.

  • The SMTP server host name and IP address details are discovered from the mx records of the DNS server. The port number is assumed to be the standard SMTP port, 25.

You can confirm if the mx records are configured on DNS by running the command set q=mx followed by domain name on the nslookup utility.

However, some DNS servers might use a round robin schedule so the retrieved list could change every time the query is run. If the mx records in DNS server are missing or if the DNS is not reachable, configure SMTP manually.

If the SMTP server is using a nonstandard port, configure it manually.

Password

The password for the sending email address.

You need to supply a password if your SMTP server requires authentication. The appliance verifies the credentials using the SMTP LOGIN authentication mechanism.

[IMPORTANT: ]

IMPORTANT: Passwords are sent in clear text because this feature does not support TLS/SSL for SMTP sessions.

SMTP options

The following options appear when the SMTP options check box is selected:

SMTP server

The fully qualified domain name or IP address of the SMTP server that manages the appliance email traffic.

SMTP port

The port number used for SMTP traffic.

If the SMTP options check box is selected, the appliance uses the information in this portion for the SMTP server.

If the SMTP options check box is not selected, the appliance detects the SMTP server from the email address domain name by default.

Alert filters
Alert email

Option switch that lets you enable or disable the email notification feature entirely.

Optionally, you can enable or disable an individual recipient/filter entry instead.

Filters

If filters are already configured, they are listed by name and the screen indicates if they are individually enabled or disabled.

Add email filter

Opens the Add Alert Email Filter screen so that you can add an email filter.

Add/Edit Alert Email Filter screen details

Screen component Description
Name

Enables you to name the filter.

Alert email

Enables or disables email notification for this entry.

Alert criteria

Reveals the available alert filter types that you either select or the alert filters that you enter, based on your choice.

Alert filters are displayed in the text field in a format according to the Predefined, Guided, or Advanced choice. Choosing another choice (for example, from predefined to guided) changes the format of the alert filter in the text field.

You can select or enter one or more alert filters in the text field.

The alert filter types are:

  • Pre-defined

Presents a simplified menu of alert filters including:

    All alerts
    All critical or warning alerts
    All critical alerts
  • Guided

Presents a list of suggested alert filters based on:

    alert status,
    alert state, or
    a predefined associated resource category.

Each associated resource category specifies a category of resources, such as networks or server hardware.

The filter is displayed with an icon, which allows you to delete it.

  • Advanced

Lets you enter a filter that captures the alert for which you want to be notified.

For example, an alert whose status is either Critical or Warning.

    status:critical status:warning

You can include a search term in the filter. For example, the following applies to an alert with an Active state that contains the text failed.

    state:active failed

Also you can specify one or more of the predefined associated resource categories:

    associatedresourcecategory:appliance

    [NOTE: ]

    NOTES:

    • Filters have the same syntax as the Smart Search box in the Activity screen, so you can copy them and paste them in this field.

    • Avoid blank filter entries, especially in large environments. Blank filter entries return all alerts.

    • Be sure to define the filter as precisely as possible to limit the number of notifications.

    • For Advanced entries, you can specify multiple instances of alert filters with the OR or AND operators to refine your filter.

The OR operator is useful for specifying filters of the same kind.

The AND operator is useful for combining non-similar filters.

      Consider these examples:

      status:critical OR status:disabled

      associatedresourcecategory:network OR associatedresourcecategory:Network sets

      associatedresourcecategory:power-devices AND status:warning OR status:critical

Resource scope

Presents a menu of the scope resources for you to select. Selecting a scope means that only alerts associated with the resources assigned to the scope will be sent.

You can enter multiple scope resources.

A selected scope is designed to limit the alerts sent to those from resources defined in the scope. However, alerts from resources that do not support the scope feature are also included.

[IMPORTANT: ]

IMPORTANT: Be aware that alerts associated with resource categories that do not support the scope feature are not filtered out. Do not rely on this behavior to capture those alerts. Instead, when filtering by resource scope, always use the associated resource category filter to restrict the filter to resource categories that do support scopes. To send alert notifications for categories that do not support scope, create a separate alert email filter that filters by resource categories but not by scope.

The Match any and Match all radio buttons let you determine if the email filter applies to any of the selected scopes or all the selected scopes, respectively.

On selection, a scope is removed from the menu and displayed as a button in the field. Each scope button displays an , with which you can deselect the scope.

Email addresses

Text box for the entry of the email address of the person or group that should be notified if the specified alert occurs.

You can enter multiple addresses, one on each line.

Send Test Email screen details

Screen component Description
